What's Yours Is Google Mine: How Users Will Track Items Via Google+

$

GoogleMine-ThumbSo I was sitting around this weekend using Gmail, Google+, and Google Drive thinking, "Gee, I wish there was a way I could give Google even more information about me." It turns out, there soon will be. The mad scientists at Mountain View are currently preparing a new service entitled Google Mine that is totally not a private sector arm of PRISM. It allows users to share their belongings with friends in their Google+ circles, letting people see both what others own and what they want. Sounds innocent enough, right?

Mine1

Key Google Mine Google+ interactions :

  • Catalog your belongings, track what you have
  • Review your belongings for your friends to see
  • Control who sees what, track conversations
  • Send requests to borrow or try out friends' stuff
  • Share stuff you wish for, get recommendations
  • Share stuff you are giving away, find takers
  • Follow, browse, search stuff that friends share
  • Search for stuff people have shared on Mine.

Snapkey's Si Evolution Keyboard (Now Out Of Beta) Makes For A Great Brain Teaser, Still Sucks For Typing

Si-ThumbI really don't want to hate Snapkey's Si Evolution keyboard. It's innovative, and as the forward thinking individual that I tell myself I am, I want to be encouraging. But here's the thing, innovative solutions should fix something. That's why they're called solutions in the first place. The Si Evolution keyboard is kind of cool, and given enough devotion, it might even speed up your typing, but it simply breaks more than it fixes.

Si-Banner

When I first launched Si Evolution, it crashed like that was its job. Yet since this app just left beta and doesn't officially launch until next week, I'll give it a pass for that.

unnamedThere are a myriad of ways to move data between your Android device and computer, but the new app Scatter promises to do it better. Scatter uses peer-to-peer data syncing to send files and text from one device to the other. It's in beta, but the functionality is impressive.

To get started, just install the app on your phone, and the desktop client on your PC. You'll have to make an account to associate your devices and keep everything in sync. From there, it's pretty easy. You can add files from the Android device, and they show up on the PC.

[New App] Where'd Ya Get Those Peepers? EyeVerify Eyeprint Beta Scans Veins In Your Eye To Unlock Apps

unnamed (6)Most people make do with a PIN or pattern lock to secure their Android devices. If you need something a little stronger (or just want to feel like Ethan Hunt) EyeVerify has just released the beta version of an app that uses honest-to-goodness eye scans. Eyeprint takes a photo of your face, then matches the pattern of blood vessels on your eyeballs to a previous photo to access locked apps. The beta is extremely limited - none of my devices are showing compatible on the Play Store. The listing specifically mentions the Galaxy S III, Note II, and HTC One.

unnamed (5) - Copy unnamed - Copy

Technically, Eyeprint isn't using the classic retina scan to grant access - that would require a small amount of infrared light to illuminate the membrane at the back of the eye.

Vine Gets 'Clear Cache' Option And More In Sizeable Update To 1.1

While Instagram is busy rolling out its own "beautiful" (also "gorgeous") video functionality, the folks at Vine are busy making good on the "rapid, significant updates" they promised for this summer, releasing version 1.1 of the service's Android app today.

Responding directly to users' feedback, Vine now includes a "clear cache" option inside the app's settings. Previously, users complained that the app's cache ate up staggering amounts of space.

image

Besides that, the update brings integration with Facebook, the ability to search for users and individual hashtags (another user request), improvements to capture and sync, and of course "other bug fixes and UI improvements." Vine co-founder and GM Dom Hoffman did after all promise the team would "continue to make changes to take advantage of Android's design principles and patterns."

If you're a Vine user and haven't already grabbed the update, just hit the widget below.

Fakeblock Finally Arrives On Android, Has The Best Tonal Recognition Of Any Privacy Software Around

fakeblocktinyWood block apps are a f*!#ing joke. Most of them don't even have mallet options or choices for wood weight or grain type. Fakeblock, which is now free on the Play Store...well, actually, it also doesn't have any of those options. But! It is still the most phenomenal block-of-wood-simulator that you will ever have the privilege of installing on your device.

2013-06-21 21.27.13

We've been waiting for this app to launch ever since the big Cinco de Quatro event where CEO George Maharis announced that the app is "real" and encouraged us to "put up this wall." The company has already received several rounds of funding including $50,000 from an unnamed executive of a real estate company.

If you're in the market for a new phone on AT&T, the time to buy is now. The company is running a promotion that knocks 50 percent off of all smartphones – including top-tier handsets like the Galaxy S4/Active or HTC One. To make this deal even more enticing, all activation fees are also getting waived through the end of the month. That's a hell of a deal.

2013-06-22_11h35_25

Here's how it works: you select the device you want, add it to the cart, and go through the normal motions of selecting your plan (or upgrading your line if you're already an AT&T customer).

PSA: This "Blackberry Messenger BBM" Published By Developer RIM Has 100k+ Installs But Is As Fake As It Gets

bbmfakeThis morning we were alerted to a possible Blackberry Messenger sighting in the Play Store, but upon closer inspection, it was immediately obvious that this app is beyond fake. The problem is it already has 100,000+ installs, it's been sitting in the Play Store since Friday, and Google hasn't done anything to remove the listing yet.

Update 6/23/13 4:25pm PT: The fake app has been taken down.

Distractions

I can see three big problems that are currently distracting unsuspecting users and making them ignore any other possible warning signs:

  1. The developer's name is RIM, which looks pretty damn official.

Samsung Takes A Page Out Of The Zune Playbook, Adds Brown/Black Color Option For The Galaxy Note 8.0

brownpowah1Brown doesn't get enough credit as a hard-working member of the color spectrum. Despite representing such wonderful stuff as chocolate, wood grain, and varying degrees of melanin pigmentation, it's somehow thought of as boring. Brown keeps its head down and does its job all day long, while that swanky overachiever White and do-nothing Black get the top spots on modern gadgets. Brown's one time to shine was the Zune, and even then it was destined to fail, by virtue of not being an iPod. Apple never even thought of making one in Brown, those jerks.

Samsung is here to give Brown another shot at rich, chromatic glory.

TWRP Manager App Released In Public Alpha For Team Win Recovery Project Users

twrpm smallThe Team Win Recovery Project (stylized "TWRP") is an alternative recovery software for various Android phones and tablets. TWRP tends to focus on newer, more interesting features, as opposed to the more established ClockworkMod recovery. A few TWRP fans have created a support app for users of the custom recovery and posted Alpha information to the XDA Developers forum, allowing users to install new ROMs, backup, restore, and wipe their device from within Android. In layman's terms: it's ROM Manager for TWRP.

2013.06.20-08.04.29 2013.06.20-08.04.39 2013.06.20-08.04.46

TWRP Manager comes from XDA members JMZ and DeesTroy (current maintainer of the TWRP). The app requires root access, Android 2.3 or later, and (naturally) some version of the TWRP custom recovery installed.

Andru, PowerbyGen's hit device charger based on our favorite robot, is unquestionably the most adorable adapter you'll ever see. Since his debut last year, Andru has been joined by white and dark versions and international accessories.

Today, PowerbyGen has expanded the family with Andra, a "more graceful" alternative to "her hunkier companions."

If you're familiar with Andru, you already know what you'll be getting with Andra: a pink version of the charger, with pose-able arms, a stand, and light-up eyes. To contrast with her pink exterior, Andra's eyes light up green.

image

Like her green counterpart, Andra will cost you $25, with EU and UK adapters (in green) running $6.99 each.

[New App] XPrivacy Gives You Massive Control Over What Your Installed Apps Are Allowed To Do

Have you ever refused to install an app because it wants too many permissions? Yeah, a lot of people have, and we don't blame them. A little too much trust can lead to stolen information, mysterious charges on your cellular bill, or worse. Thanks to developer M66B, we've got a simple way to lock down potentially misbehaving software. His new mod, XPrivacy, can block several types of activities and queries, despite the permissions granted at installation. It can even substitute GPS coordinates and your MAC address, with plans to add support for more types of data in the future. This is a lot like the upcoming Incognito Mode in CyanogenMod, but it can be used with almost any rooted ROM, including those from OEMs.

Developers Can Now Mark Their Apps For "Google Play For Education" In The Play Store Developer Console

GooglePlayEducationGoogle Play for Education is starting to come together. Last week, Google threw up an 8-minute video detailing their new initiative. Today, developers can now mark their apps for "Google Play for Education" in the Play Store Developer Console. This is how Google intends to seed their new store, which will be heavily monitored and curated, quite unlike the Play Store itself. Marking an app will place it in a queue for evaluation by a third-party network of educators. These educators will assign the apps the appropriate subject, grade level, and applicable common core standards metadata.

CyanogenMod's Next Killer Feature: Take Photos From The Quick Settings Panel With A Live Viewfinder Tile

nexusae0_ico_thumbA new CyanogenMod feature is currently under review, and it looks staggeringly cool. Developed by Nebojsa Cvetkovic, this addition would place a new camera tile in the Quick Settings panel. Tap it, and you get a live viewfinder capable of taking snapshots right from the notification shade.

The first tap on the tile will start up the camera with continuous autofocus if the device supports it. Taking pictures is as easy as tapping again. The photos are full resolution, just like if they were taken with the camera app. Simply close the notification shade to stop the camera feed.

It shouldn't impact battery as the camera viewfinder is only activated when you tap the tile.

[Au-ful] Have $2436 Lying Around? This Totally Tasteful HTC One Is Plated In 24 Carats Of Gold

AustinPowersThe HTC One is a beautiful device. At a time when most Android phones are made of plastic, HTC betted on aluminum for its flagship device. The handset just exudes style and class, but there is something it's missing. It screams premium, but it doesn't quite say ... elite. If only it were made of gold. Now that would be a quality device. While we can't expect HTC of all companies to have the visionary mindset necessary to deliver such a product, the fine folks over at Goldgenie understand class. They have produced an HTC One available in 24ct gold.
